Objectives
The New Zealand Map Society was formed in 1977 with the following objectives in mind:
- to further the development and promotion of high standards in
map collections in New Zealand
- to encourage communication between map users, map librarians
and map producers
- to liaise with similar organisations overseas.
History
The New Zealand Map Society had its beginnings in 1977 as the New Zealand Map Keepers Circle. As the original name suggests, the Society was initially formed to bring together people who worked with maps. In 1987 the Society changed its name as part of a move to broaden its membership to include not only those who work with maps, but also map collectors, map users and people with an interest in New Zealand geography and history.
